WHAT IS A BLEPHAROPLASTY (EYELID LIFT) SURGERY?

Facial features undergo changes due to various factors, including environmental conditions and the natural aging process. In response to these changes, individuals often turn to plastic and cosmetic surgeries for solutions. Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift) surgery stands out as a popular cosmetic procedure.

Over time, the muscles around the eyes weaken, leading to sagging of the upper and lower eyelids and eyebrows, accompanied by the development of under-eye bags. Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift) in Turkey is a cosmetic surgical intervention designed to address these issues. This procedure involves tightening the eyelids by eliminating sagging skin, natural creases, and accumulated fats from both the lower and upper eyelids, reshaping them to enhance the overall appearance of the eyes. The comprehensive surgery, which spans approximately two hours, targets both upper and lower eyelids for a comprehensive rejuvenation.

In certain cases, patients may opt to combine the blepharoplasty operation with a brow lift to achieve a fully revitalized appearance. While the surgery may involve low-risk side effects such as temporary swelling, these effects typically subside within one or two weeks. Results for the upper lids can last between 5 to 7 years, with lower eyelid surgery being rarely repeated due to its enduring effects.

CANDIDATES FOR BLEPHAROPLASTY

Ideal candidates for Blepharoplasty must meet specific health criteria:

  • Good overall health with no diseases hindering Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lifting) or leading to complications during or after the operation.
  • Conditions such as thyroid diseases, dry eyes, hypertension, circulatory disorders, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and retinal detachment need consideration.
  • Psychological stability, realistic expectations, and a minimum age of 35 are prerequisites for candidates.

PRE-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR BLEPHAROPLASTY

Patients preparing for Eyelid Lift surgery should adhere to necessary recommendations:

  • Complete required medical tests.
  • Take prescribed medications for surgery preparation.
  • Inform your doctor about current medications before the procedure.
  • Avoid smoking for at least a month before surgery.
  • Steer clear of aspirin, NSAIDs, or herbal supplements leading to bleeding and swelling for at least two weeks before the operation.
  • Abstain from stimulants like Arabic coffee and alcohol for at least two weeks before surgery.
  • Avoid blood thinners, such as green tea, as they may cause severe bleeding and delay recovery.

BLEPHAROPLASTY STAGES

The surgical procedure involves three stages:

  1. Anesthesia:
    • Administered to ensure patient comfort.
    • General or local anesthesia is chosen based on patient needs.
  2. Surgical Incision:
    • Incision lines are strategically planned to hide scars within natural eyelid lines.
    • For the upper eyelid, the surgeon tightens it by making a surgical incision within the natural lines of the eyelid, removing or repositioning excess fat under the skin, tightening muscles, and eliminating sagging eyelid skin.
    • The incision under the lower lash line addresses fat removal or repositioning.
  3. Incision Closing:
    • After excess skin removal, the surgeon closes the incision with stitches, typically removed after one week.

POST-OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS FOR BLEPHAROPLASTY

For a healthy and fast recovery, follow these post-operative instructions:

  • Use ice packs on the eyes for ten minutes every hour for a cold compress immediately after the operation. Repeat four to five times a day.
  • Clean eyelids thoroughly using prescribed eye drops and certain ointments.
  • Refrain from stress or strenuous activity for at least a week after the operation.
  • Avoid swimming for at least one week post-operation.
  • Abstain from challenging exercises for at least a week.
  • Refrain from smoking for at least a week.
  • Avoid scratching your eyes to prevent harm.
  • Do not use eye lenses for at least two weeks.
  • Wear black glasses to shield eyelids from any exposure to the sun and wind.
  • When lying down or sleeping, elevate your head more than your chest for a few days.
  • Refrain from taking blood thinners like aspirin, ibuprofen, and herbal supplements for at least a week to prevent bleeding.

Frequently Asked

Questions

Recovery times vary, but on average, patients can return to normal activities within 7-14 days. Following post-operative care instructions is crucial for optimal healing.

Like any surgery, there are potential risks, including infection and scarring. However, choosing an experienced surgeon and following pre- and post-operative instructions can minimize these risks.

While the primary goal is aesthetic improvement, some patients may experience improved peripheral vision as a result of reduced sagging in the upper eyelids.

The results are long-lasting, with upper eyelid results lasting 5-7 years or more. Lower eyelid surgery is often not repeated due to its enduring effects.

Patients are typically advised to wait at least one week before applying makeup to the eyelids to ensure proper healing and reduce the risk of infection.
